EKU Risk Management and Insurance Welcomes Dr. Lisa Gardner

EKU’s School of Business is pleased to welcome Dr. Lisa Gardner to the Risk Management and Insurance program. Dr. Gardner will be joining EKU as RMI Program Director in August 2018.

Outgoing Director Dr. Burke Christensen joined RMI faculty in 2006 and has helped build a robust, nationally recognized program. He also holds the Robert B. Morgan Chair in Insurance. Regarding the leadership transition, Christensen said that it is an exciting time to be an RMI student and that “Dr. Gardner is a distinguished insurance scholar who has great experience leading a nationally-recognized academic program at Drake.  We are delighted to have her as our new leader.” Come August, Christensen will stay on as an RMI faculty.

Gardner, who currently serves as professor in the College of Business and Public Administration at Drake University and previously as Chair of the School of Actuarial Science and Risk Management, holds a Ph.D. from Georgia State University in Risk Management and Insurance, as well as an MBA from Drake University. EKU’s RMI program is excited to welcome the high level talent and experienced service of Dr. Gardner.

The RMI program continues to grow, currently home to around 120 students, offering a Bachelor of Business Administration in Risk Management and Insurance, as well as a minor, which is available to students of any major.

Additionally, students can now pursue the program online. The BBA in RMI was launched as an online program in the fall of 2017 and is expected to celebrate its first graduating senior in December 2019. Online program coordinator Dr. Siwei Gao says, "there are currently 19 students enrolled in our online RMI program. Many of them are working professionals, including a risk analyst with a management degree, but he seeking his second undergraduate degree focusing in RMI. The online students enjoy the same benefits as our on-campus students, including eligibility of EKU RMI scholarships."

EKU's Risk Management and Insurance program is the only one of its kind in the state of Kentucky. Internship opportunities are numerous, and industry demand for graduating seniors is high. Scholarship opportunities abound as the RMI office alone awarded over $22,000 in scholarships in 2017. This does not include additional awards presented to RMI students through other University scholarships and outside scholarships.
