James Hughes Visits EKU Campus as Risk Manager in Residence

Hughes speaks to RMI students

Mr. James Hughes, an alum of Harvard College, visited EKU’s College of Business and Technology to act as a Risk Manager in Residence on November 16th and 17th.

Students had the opportunity to learn several key concepts of risk management and insurance policy from Hughes. They also had the chance to glean information from his personal experiences, with more than thirty years on the job.

Hughes is currently responsible for ConocoPhillips’ risk and insurance programs in more than forty countries; he leads, manages, and motivates a multi-office and multi-cultural team that includes several “indirect” reports around the world. ConocoPhillips is the world’s largest independent exploration and production company, based on proved reserves and production of liquids and natural gas.

Hughes began as a trainee and underwriter. Students of Risk Management here at Eastern had a chance to learn from Hughes how the industry has changed over the years and what to expect from the beginnings of their own careers.

Hughes is not focused on only his career, but volunteer service as well, something that many Eastern students and their potential employers also hold valuable. His experience includes serving on the Board of a food pantry, Service Corp Houston, and other small projects.

A well-rounded and well-educated individual, students had a great time learning and gaining skills!
