Partnership with Women Leaders in Insurance and Finance Brings Opportunity for Students
This fall, EKU’s Risk Management and Insurance organized its first women in leadership day at the Business and Technology Center on September 18, 2018. The event was organized to inform and introduce students to the risk management and insurance field though the knowledge of the guest speaker, Maureen Gallagher, as well as vendors, finance and insurance professionals, and a panel of women insurance professionals. It was also a valuable opportunity for students to connect with professionals.
“The connections that we make with industry professionals and students is extremely valuable to both parties. The RMI department has long felt the responsibility of bringing students and professionals together. It not only enriches our students learning experiences but creates connections that benefit our program growth as well.” Debbie Ellis: Program Coordinator for RMI.
Gallagher is a nationally renowned insurance professional, currently serving as Michigan managing director and national real estate and worker’s comp brands leader at AssuredPartners. Her specialties include insurance placement, risk management and consulting. Recently, she was named “Best and Brightest” and one of “Detroit’s Most Influential Women” by Crain’s Detroit Business, and a “Power Broker” by Risk and Insurance.
Lisa Gardner, Director of EKU's RMI program, said: "The comments from our keynote speaker, Maureen Gallagher, and the panelists reflect years of wisdom gained through experience and a remarkable degree of business savvy. One of my students told me she used some of what she heard at the event in a job interview the next day! You can't underestimate the immediate value to our students of the kind of real world experience shared at this event."
Women Leaders in Insurance and Financial Services, who partnered with EKU’s RMI department to co-host this event, have granted an endowed scholarship for the second year in a row. Lisa Gardner commented:
"We are truly grateful to Women Leaders in Insurance for partnering with us on this event, and for their very generous gift of $25,000 for an endowed scholarship. This was their second such gift, and brings the endowment for that particular scholarship to $50,000, an amount that will produce scholarships for deserving RMI students for years to come!"
It is the goal of both parties to host the event annually. EKU School of Business looks forward to the Fall 2019 Women in Leadership event.
